Former Rockmart star Ware is one step from Super Bowl

For the second time in the span of 12 months, a former high school star from Greater Rome is on the doorstep of being in the Super Bowl.

Last January, it was Marcus Dixon, the former Pepperell star.

Now, it’s D.J. Ware’s turn.

Ware, who went by “Danny” during his playing career at Rockmart High, will play for New York Giants this weekend when they face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game. If the Giants win, Ware will be involved in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5.

Dixon, a member of the New York Jets, was in a similar position last year, when his team made it to the AFC championship game. But the Jets lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and missed out on a trip to the Super Bowl.

Ware already has one Super Bowl ring with the Giants. He was a member of the 2008 championship team, although he was not active for the game.

Ware has seen action in 15 games for the Giants this season, including Sunday’s 37-20 stunning victory over the Packers.

Ware had just two carries in the win, but has totaled 163 yards on 46 attempts for the season, and has made an impact on the passing game as well. He caught 27 passes this season for a total of 170 yards.

At Rockmart, Ware was selected to the RN-T’s All-Area team on multiple occasions, and went to play at UGA after playing one season at Hargrave Military Academy.

For his career, he has seen action in 44 regular season games with a total of 324 yards rushing on 81 carriers, and 37 receptions for 252 yards.
